Mobility as a Service
Mobycon has become an expert in innovative ways to attract more customers to public transit. In that respect, we are participating in a project commissioned by the European Union, called Collective Innovation for Public Transport in European Cities (CIPTEC). In close co-operation with universities, public transit operators and authorities, amongst other, we are researching innovations from within and outside the public transit sector that could help increasing ridership. Our final goal is to have an online toolbox available to anyone interested in improving their local public transit system, where you can find innovations that will help decision makers to boost the quality of their public transit system.
So far, we have researched the needs of both the supply and demand sides of public transit (i.e., public operators/authorities and customers), revealed trends that are relevant to those needs, and identified over 200 innovations from the public and private (e.g. aviation) industries, as well as non-transport related organizations (e.g. healthcare). We have ranked these innovations and selected the top 31 most promising innovations to attract more passengers to public transit at a limited cost for the operators and/or authorities. We had these innovations cross-checked by external experts to ensure that we had selected the most promising ones.
In addition, we organized co-creation workshops across Europe, through which we asked public transit users – in addition to other stakeholders – to come up with innovative ideas to improve public transit. We also developed an online co-creation platform, wherewe encourage people from different backgrounds (practical experts, university professionals, public transport users etc.) to share their innovative ideas to change public transit for the better.
At present, our consortium led by the University of Leuven (KUL), Belgium, is researching the possibilities of influencing people’s behaviour regarding the use of public transit. For example, short messages such as “You are contributing to a greener and cleaner city” on the bus could make people feel more positive towards riding the bus and may even encourage them to use the bus more often. Commuters may also start using the bus on weekends.
We have found that numerous (selected) innovations are related to the concept of Mobility as a Service (MaaS). In MaaS, the customer is unburdened in their mobility needs. The whole journey from door to door is organized by a single organization that offers multiple travel options through using traditional public transit, but also public bikes, car share etc. Customers do not need to worry about the mode or payment as that is all being taken care of by the facilitating organization. Customers get to choose between different options varying in travel time, comfort and price.
