Earlier this year our DACH team members visited Northeim for the start of a wayfinding project that will deliver a network of connecting points for cyclists in the region to plan their journeys with, similar to the knooppunt system we have here in the Netherlands. Helena von der Ohe and Dagmar Köhler wrote this about the project and what it means for Northeim.
As the recreational cycling season is blossoming, Mobycon’s DACH team engaged with approximately 35 stakeholders earlier this year to establish a new wayfinding system in the Northeim region. This was to ensure that all local knowledge about relevant routes and the quality of cycling infrastructure is considered as we develop a “Knooppunt” system for the region.
The region hired Mobycon to help them create a cohesive cycling network connected by numbered wayfinding posts. This intuitive concept, based on the Dutch “Knooppunt” system, enables cyclists to plan flexible and seamless routes without relying on detailed maps or digital navigation. In the Netherlands, the well-established routing system facilitates route planning and is expected to enhance cycle tourism in the region.

Mobycon is responsible for the analysis, planning, and development of the “Knooppunt” system, as well as for involving key stakeholders in the district. Under the leadership of Mobycon’s Senior Transport Planner Robin van der Griend, the project started in February 2025.
The planning phase is expected to be completed by September 2025, with implementation starting in 2026.

The planning process consists of several phases:
Last week, our team spent several days in Northeim again to meet with the Auftraggeber, the Landkreis Northeim, for final discussions about the project before the site tour of the Knotenpunkte. Our team took part in the comprehensive Knotenpunkt site tour. Divided into four groups – two by car and two by bike – we visited and photographed every single Knotenpunkt location across the Landkreis. The weather couldn’t have been better, and it was a great opportunity not only to see every corner of the Landkreis but also to spend an active and enjoyable day together.

Municipalities and cycling clubs are actively involved in the planning process to ensure a practical system for both everyday cyclists and tourists. With high-quality cycling infrastructure and innovative signage, the district of Northeim is also setting an example for the surrounding regions.
