In Ontario, the traffic control used at mid-block bicycle crossings consists of either traffic signal control or two-way stop/yield control with priority for the motor traffic movements. Both options often require cyclists to stop, thereby increasing the effort required to cycle, and decreasing attractiveness of cycling as a mode of travel. In contrast, Ontario has long had pedestrian crossovers (PXO), which are a standardized traffic control device to give pedestrians priority at roadway crossings. In this presentation, Okka Maw and Narayan Donaldson discuss the methods used in Australia and the Netherlands to safely give priority to bicycles at mid-block crossings, including the legislative framework and the geometric design features. They then discuss the potential for bicycle priority crossings to become more widely implemented in Ontario.
