Complete Networks: Avoiding conflicts through network design

Date and Time:

Monday, May 1, 2023

10:25 – 11:25 AM

A well-designed street network manages the competing needs of streets: to connect people and communities, efficiently move goods, and to support the places along them.

While a lot of progress has been made in Ontario to improve roadway and intersection designs to safely accommodate cycling, more could be done at a network level to separate bicycle routes and motor traffic routes. Through 50 years of planning and engineering, the Dutch have increasingly untangled the networks for different movement types and vehicle classes to reduce conflicts between users. In this presentation, Integrated Mobility Consultants Okka Maw and Narayan Donaldson reveal how the Dutch Sustainable Safety approach allows street networks to be rationalized to minimize stops for cyclists, reduce conflicts at intersections, reduce competition for scarce road space, and affordably implement attractive bicycle routes. They then show how the principles can be applied in Ontario, using local examples.

Narayan and Okka will present as part of the session “Bikeway Planning and Design”. Learn more about the conference and register for the in-person event, held in Hamilton, ON, here.
