Research: The safety of protected Intersections and their use case for Germany (2021-2024) Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt)
The Malley roundabout is a key intersection in the transportation network of Lausanne, Switzerland, connecting the city center to the campus of the two local universities and serving metro and bus lines. Situated on the evolving cycle highway network, the intersection faces challenges including high crash rates, disruption to pedestrian and cycling flow, and rush hour congestion. Mobycon was engaged to redesign the Malley roundabout using Dutch-inspired roundabout design principles.
Two scenarios were developed in alignment with the technical recommendations and safety standards from the CROW manual. The priorities were to improve safety and comfort for all users through equitable space distribution, optimize visibility at potential conflict points. Specific design elements were tailored for each axis, emphasizing a clear and intuitive road layout that merges Dutch expertise with Swiss specificities.
